Alpine Ibex were hunted almost to extinction. These days, the population is fairly stable again thanks to Italy's King Immanuel II who decided in 1850 to create a game reserve for the few remaining Ibex. I doubt he really had species conservation in mind, but all the Alpine Ibex living today are descendants of the about 100 animals in that reserve.
